New Mexico may be one of the nation’s most sparsely populated states, but that doesn’t mean Albuquerque isn’t jammed with shopping opportunities, especially along Route 66 –- the famed Mother Road -– that runs through town. In Albuquerque, great buys are in Southwestern items, including assorted arts and crafts from contemporary to traditional Native American and Hispanic works in silver and turquoise. Jewelry, pottery, weavings, baskets, paintings, and Hopi kachina dolls are plentiful in these parts. Specialty shops include Anitras Gallery and Old Town Poster Company with limited edition prints, and original art of the Southwest, and Shootin’ Irons, doing business in antique firearms, boots, saddles, chaps, swords, and knives.
Albuquerque also boasts a trio of New Mexico’s largest malls, Coronado Center with Macy’s and JCPenney, the upscale Winrock Center with Dillard’s and a Godiva Chocolatier, and the Cottonwood Mall, anchored by Dillard’s, Foley’s, Sears, Mervyn’s, and with 135 specialty shops. Galleries abound, many downtown, featuring regional artists, many living in town. Regional fashion designers do business around the plaza in Old Town, featuring more than 40 merchants including Elaine’s of Old Town, featuring pottery, tiles and Mexican art. Just beyond the northern city limit, the Sandia Pueblo runs a crafts market. In Sandia Pueblo, Bien Mur Indian Market Center shows off fine Indian rugs, jewelry, and crafts.
